Protecting Your Vision from Diabetic Complications
Living with diabetes means taking extra care of your overall health, and your eyes are a big part of that picture. Routine eye care is part of a strong, comprehensive diabetes management plan.
Diabetes can change your eye health over time, often without any clear signs. This makes routine eye exams incredibly valuable. By looking closely at your eyes every year, we can proactively assess for possible eye diseases before any symptoms even appear.
Protecting your vision starts with regular, preventative care. Let our team support your long-term eye health journey.
The Connection Between Diabetes and Your Eye Health
To understand how diabetes impacts your eyes, it helps to look at how it affects your blood vessels.
Diabetes can cause changes to the delicate blood vessels throughout your body, including the tiny ones that supply blood to your retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. When these blood vessels become damaged or start to leak, it can disrupt your eye health and lead to vision problems.
The tricky part is that these changes usually happen quietly. In most cases, there are no noticeable symptoms until irreversible vision loss has already begun.

Understanding Diabetic Eye Conditions
When diabetes affects the blood vessels in your eyes, it can lead to specific conditions. The most common is diabetic retinopathy, which happens when the blood vessels in the retina swell, leak, or close off completely. If left unmanaged, abnormal new blood vessels can grow on the surface of the retina.
Diabetic retinopathy is the fifth leading cause of avoidable blindness in North America, with over 1 million Canadians diagnosed with the condition. As diabetic retinopathy worsens, it can progress into diabetic macular edema. This occurs when fluid builds up in the macula (the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision), causing it to swell and blur your sight, eventually causing central vision loss.
Additionally, living with diabetes carries an increased risk of developing other eye conditions, like glaucoma and cataracts.
Our Technology for a Comfortable Exam
We want your diabetic eye exam to be a comfortable, informative experience. To keep a close watch on your internal eye health, we use modern, noninvasive diagnostic technology.
Tools like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and ultra-widefield retinal imaging allow us to take highly detailed, digital pictures of the inside of your eye without any discomfort.
We also use tonometry to check your eye pressure and visual field testing to gently map your side vision, an important test to screen for glaucoma. This technology increases clinical accuracy for early diagnosis while making your visit more relaxed.
